Bio
International music star Angelique Kidjo returns with her second album for Razor & Tie, Oyo, set for release on February 9th 2009. In 2007 Kidjo won a Grammy for her last album, Djin Djin (Razor & Tie Entertainment/Starbucks Entertainment).
The African born singer/songwriter returns to her roots with an album of songs that influenced her youth. Oyo features Kidjo partnering with such luminaries as John Legend, superb guitarist/singer Lionel Loueke (who also is a native of Kidjo’s home country Benin), Carlos Santana, Roy Hargrove, and Afro Beat band Antibalas to create an album which is truly global in scope. Oyo is rich and full of soft, powerful vocals and a resounding pulse that serves as the heartbeat of her songs and the connection to her native country.
Kidjo continues to receive an abundance of critical praise from USA Today and the Associated Press to appearances on CNN, The Tonight Show, The Late Show With David Letterman and The CBS Saturday Early Show. An inspiring performer, she is also a dedicated humanitarian, working for Oxfam, as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador and recently created her own charity, Batonga which is dedicated to creating a culture that promotes secondary education for girls in Africa.
